Prospective YCS Families FAQ

How many children attend YCS and how many students are there per class?

For the 2015-2016 school year, we have approximately 575 students in Grades K – 5.  Class sizes vary from grade to grade. DOE class size limits for Kindergarten are 25 students and Grades 1-5 are 32 students. 

How many teachers are in the classroom?

There is one teacher per classroom.

ICT (Integrated Co-Teaching) Classrooms have two teachers per classroom. In addition to the classroom teacher(s), we have student teachers from several universities such as Columbia Teachers College and Stern College.

What is an ICT Classroom? The ICT classroom includes students with and without Individual Educational Plans (Supports) and has two teachers, a general education teacher and a special education teacher.

What Support Staff and Service Providers are at YCS?

We have a guidance counselor as well as speech and language specialists, school psychologists, a school social worker, a physical therapist, occupational therapists, SETSS/Academic Intervention specialists, an ESL specialist and a full-time nurse and medical room.

What are school hours?  Do you have early drop off?

The regular school day begins at 8:40 am for all students.  Dismissal is at 2:50 pm for grades K-1 and 3:00 pm for grades 2-5.  Our free breakfast program is offered daily to all students.  Drop-off for breakfast is between 8:00-8:30 am. Where does my child eat lunch?

Children eat lunch in the YCS Café, sit with their class, and are supervised by YCS Staff.  Children may choose school lunch (hot entrée or cold sandwiches, salad bar, fruit, milk) or bring lunch from home. Price for school lunch is $1.75.  Some families may be eligible for free or reduced lunch, determined by the information provided on your school lunch application. Please note that ALL parents must fill out the Lunch Program application in order for YCS to receive the appropriate allocation of federal Title 1 dollars and to determine the eligibility of children for certain rights and services under the No Child Left Behind Act.  CLICK HERE for more info. and to complete the form online.

What about nut allergies?

The YCS cafeteria is not nut-free (peanut butter sandwiches are served as part of the NYC school lunch program); however, children with nut allergies may sit at a nut-free table.  All classrooms are nut-free.

Will my child have recess every day?

All children have recess either before or immediately following lunch.  We have two fully padded schoolyards where our students play.  Our partnership with Asphalt Green provides the REP (Recess Enhancement Program). Instructors from AG engage students in organized games.

Can I apply to YCS if I reside outside your zone?

YCS is a zoned school and therefore we must give priority to children that live within our zone.  To find your zoned school, go to

If I move in to your zone during the school year, can I enroll my child?

Yes, provided we have space available.

If I move out of the zone, can my child stay at YCS?

Yes, provided that you still reside in the 5 boroughs of New York City.

I live in the YCS zone and would like to take a tour of the school.

School group tours are given once a month from December–April.  Please go to our school website to sign up for a tour.  We are unable to accommodate private tours.

What specialty classes does YCS have?

We have specialty teachers who teach weekly scheduled art, music, dance, physical education, and science.

Is there Enrichment at YCS?

In addition to weekly scheduled specialty classes, we have developed partnerships with several Community Based Organizations, and with the support of our PTA, have been able to continue to enrich our academic curriculum. Our students are encouraged to expand their interests and discover and/or develop their passion(s). Partnerships include:

  • the 92nd Street Y

  • Asphalt Green
  • New York Historical Society

Do you have after-school programs?

Yes, we have several programs (on site and at other facilities). Programs are run independently of YCS. Please check the YCS website for after-school registration information, program descriptions and cost HERE.

How do I register my child for Kindergarten? Where can I get more information about YCS?

Beginning in January 2016, the Office of Enrollment will provide information regarding the Kindergarten application process.  If your child turns 5 by December 30th, 2016 you may apply for Kindergarten online, by phone, or in person at a Borough Enrollment Office.  For more information: CLICK HERE.
